Aerobic septic alarm going off? What to check

Aerobic systems have an audible and visual alarm on the control panel. It usually means one of two things: the air pump has stopped, or the water level in the pump tank is high.

Safe first steps

  1. Press the silence button. Many panels re-arm the alarm after a few hours if the fault is still there.
  2. Check the breaker for the septic system and any GFCI outlet the aerator plugs into.
  3. Listen at the aerator. No hum, or a hot and silent unit, usually means a failed pump or diaphragm.
  4. Cut water use (laundry, dishwasher, long showers) until the cause is fixed.
  5. After heavy rain, a high-water alarm can clear once the spray cycle runs.

Call a provider if

  • The alarm comes back after resetting the breaker
  • The aerator is silent or smells burnt
  • Sewage is backing up or surfacing

Under contract, complaint visits count as service calls, and the provider must record them (TCEQ). Find a provider.

Never open tank lids or enter a tank. The gases can be deadly.

FAQ

Why is my aerobic septic alarm going off?

Usually a failed or unplugged air pump, a tripped breaker, or high water in the pump tank.

Can I just turn the alarm off?

You can silence it, but the alarm is required equipment and must stay working. Fix the cause.
